Hours: 10 - 5, All Days

Elizabeth St. Hilaire is coming back to the Lone Star State to share her unique collage technique she has termed "Paper Paintings." In this 3-day workshop, Elizabeth will instruct students through demos and personal interaction in several methods she uses to paint and texture papers that will later be used to create a collage. Elizabeth's collage application process is modeled after the techniques used in traditional painting with an emphasis placed on creating depth and shape with high, mid, and low tones as well as directional ripping. No prior collage experience is necessary. Some painting would be helpful, but is not imperative. A supply list will be provided upon deposit.

Beginning students will complete an apple collage as their first project. They may also begin a second project with subject matter of the student's choice. Students who have taken Elizabeth's class before may repeat the apple study or may inquire about an intermediate project.

See the potential of this collage technique in this youtube video.

Join us as we jump into a dynamic "playground of innovation" full of inspiring demonstrations, lectures, encouragement and practice. You’ll learn how to coax an image out of an abstract background, how to paint abstractly from a reference, and how to paint non-objectively utilizing only the power and intricacies of shape, colour and line. You'll explore them all by working intuitively and embrace and respond to what shows up. Working in a series will help reinforce the concepts.

We’ll touch on notions of confidence, procrastination, vulnerability, curiosity, courage, talent, play, inspiration, intuition, your mean critic, metaphor, symbolic elements, competition, marketing, your belief systems, finding balance, and more! There’ll be plenty of time for "playing" and creating along with individual attention and guidance.

Joan is especially gifted in helping students gain more freedom in the creative process and discover their own unique artistic voice. She believes that people are more open to learning and inspiration when they are having fun, so her workshops are filled with laughter and lightness. A multitude of approaches and techniques will give beginners encouragement and confidence, while more advanced students will benefit from Joan’s insightful solutions to their artistic challenges.

Joan Fullerton holds a BFA and a MFA degree in painting from the University of Wyoming. She was a college art instructor at Laramie County Community College from 1990 to 2003 in Cheyenne, WY. She has made her mark and established her reputation as a well-known and respected artist and teacher. Joan's work has been in galleries, juried shows and museums since the early 70's and she has shown internationally in Italy and Japan. She was recently published in the 2010 edition of Open Studios Press and the Society of Layerists in Multi-Media book, Visual Journeys, Art of the 21st Century. April 6-8, 2018
Cost: NBAL Members $350     Non-Members $380
$100 Deposit Required
Hours: 10 - 5, All Days
All Skill Levels Welcome

This workshop will focus on the basics for creating dramatic, dynamic, timeless landscapes: value, composition and simplifying shapes into strong abstract design. Color relationships, edges, temperature of light will be discussed, as well as the application of value sketches and atmospheric perspective for stronger statements in your paintings.   Also to be discussed: creating a passionate approach to your subject matter, evoking a more interactive response with the viewer.

Teresa is a recognized workshop instructor nationally and in Europe. She enjoys creating a supportive and energetic atmosphere in which students can thrive, establishing their individual style and artistic statement. Believing that painting is a process and helping the participants relax and enjoy the journey. Workshops are a wonderful time to travel outside your comfort zone and explore new directions.

DEMONSTRATION
Each day will begin with a demonstration. Teresa enjoys giving as much knowledge and understanding of the pastel medium as possible in the intensive workshop scenario. Explaining her technique and approach, her demonstrations are in depth and developed. She often choses to work with photos she has not previously used, allowing the workshop participants to watch (as though in her studio) as she works through and resolves different issues during the painting process. There will be time during the demonstration for questions and answers.

The remainder of each day will be devoted to helping the participants develop their paintings starting with a value study. Believing this is essential for honing composition, value, shapes, etc. and ultimately a better painting. Personal attention is very important, working continually from participant to participant, giving constructive critiques and pointers as their paintings progress.
