GOALS
Resolving and overcoming issues that have prevented you from placing those finishing touches on your paintings by utilizing self-critique methods for problem solving.

Using paintings that need resolution, as studies or inspiration for new paintings. Making the new paintings successful by diagnosing what isn’t working in previous attempts and applying innovative solutions for success. Utilizing strong value design, compositional tools, and color harmony to aid in successful paintings.

Learn how to edit, re-arrange elements, and crop for better design and composition.

BRING TO CLASS
Any subject matter will be acceptable.

Students who have paintings with problems that they cannot resolve are encouraged to bring those paintings to class, up to three paintings the first day. We will diagnose the issues in those paintings that may be creating problems, correct them and bring the painting to the finish line!

Paintings which the student may want to use as studies for new paintings should be brought to class as well. With these we will create stronger, more successful paintings!

Expressions of Light: Creating Dramatic, Dynamic Landscapes (Pastel) with Terea Saia

April 6-8, 2018
Cost: NBAL Members $350     Non-Members $380
$100 Deposit Required
Hours: 10 - 5, All Days
All Skill Levels Welcome

This workshop will focus on the basics for creating dramatic, dynamic, timeless landscapes: value, composition and simplifying shapes into strong abstract design. Color relationships, edges, temperature of light will be discussed, as well as the application of value sketches and atmospheric perspective for stronger statements in your paintings.   Also to be discussed: creating a passionate approach to your subject matter, evoking a more interactive response with the viewer.

Teresa is a recognized workshop instructor nationally and in Europe. She enjoys creating a supportive and energetic atmosphere in which students can thrive, establishing their individual style and artistic statement. Believing that painting is a process and helping the participants relax and enjoy the journey. Workshops are a wonderful time to travel outside your comfort zone and explore new directions.

DEMONSTRATION
Each day will begin with a demonstration. Teresa enjoys giving as much knowledge and understanding of the pastel medium as possible in the intensive workshop scenario. Explaining her technique and approach, her demonstrations are in depth and developed. She often choses to work with photos she has not previously used, allowing the workshop participants to watch (as though in her studio) as she works through and resolves different issues during the painting process. There will be time during the demonstration for questions and answers.

The remainder of each day will be devoted to helping the participants develop their paintings starting with a value study. Believing this is essential for honing composition, value, shapes, etc. and ultimately a better painting. Personal attention is very important, working continually from participant to participant, giving constructive critiques and pointers as their paintings progress.

"Paper Paintings Collage" with Elizabeth St. Hilaire
MIXED MEDIA and PET PORTRAITS

October 12-14, 2018
Cost: NBAL Members $395   Non-Members $425
$100 Deposit Required
Hours: 10 - 5, All Days
All skill levels welcome

Elizabeth St. Hilaire is coming back to the Lone Star State to share her unique collage technique she has termed "Paper Paintings."

In this 3-day workshop, the self professed “Collage Queen” will guide you through an introduction to her unique Paper Paintings process with a small, simple apple collage to whet your appetite. From there students will hit the ground running, working on a mixed media collage portrait of man’s best friend–not limited to dogs or cats! Plan to work on whatever “pet” makes you happy, birds, fish, ferrets included! During this comprehensive workshop you will learn a unique figurative mixed media collage technique. Emphasis will be on successfully transferring your reference photo to the canvas, defining form using light and shadow, and treating every paper tear as a brush stroke. Students will create impressionistic collages that look like paintings.

Create your hand-painted paper palette through Gelli Plate printing, staining, stamping and patterning that will be torn up and glued down over an acrylic underpainting.

This class is focused on learning and growing creatively in a FUN environment. No prior collage experience is necessary. Some painting experience is helpful.

Elizabeth St. Hilaire is a Signature Member of the National Collage Society, teaching in the US and Europe. See the potential of this collage technique here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E5Htk50JqaA
